In 1952, Leona Merritt, a widow, moved from the Bronx to Nesconset on Long Island, New York where she began her life of caring for unwanted and abandoned cats and dogs on her small, wooded property. Mrs. Merritt knew the importance of spay/neutering was essential to controlling the stray population. She used all her financial assets to provide for the animal and lived off a minimal Social Security check which she usually shared with local veterinarians to obtain medical care. At age 75, Mrs. Merritt was caring for 32 dogs and 16 cats, tending to her one acre property on her own, including fixing dog pens and stockade fences. It is in her memory, and in tribute to her that we have established Merritt Animal Haven.
The Merritt Animal Haven was established exclusively for and is dedicated to the care and rescue of unwanted, neglected and abused animals. It is our mission to follow the example of Leona Merritt by rescuing and providing either adoption or sanctuary services (on a case by case basis) to each animal in need. What in particular makes us so special? We can provide permanent sanctuary to those animals with special needs and those considered unadoptable after socialization. We consider spay/neutering to be an important part of our mission.
